Welcome To The Bangkok Family Vacation Page

The political environment in Thailand has been turbulent in recent years. Since 2006, the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD, also known as “Red Shirts”) have led large political protests and conducted sporadic acts of violence throughout the country, notably in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. However, I lived in Thailand during this time and the risk for foreignors is not very high. Thailand is a great place for a family vacation or holiday and most Thailand citizens welcome tourists wth open arms.

Bangkok Victory Monument

Bangkok is a great place to go with kids. Thai people love children. We have spent much time traveling around Bangkok and it is not a sweat pouring, dirty, dinghy, sex crazed place as some people may think it is. Planning a family vacation with something for everyone can be a daunting task. Some family members may want history while others want adventure. Some may want to go shopping and others want to relax on the beach. If this is your family, then Bangkok is the right place for you. Bangkok is a vibrant and exciting city with something for everyone. There are enough activities and places to see that you could spend a whole month in Bangkok and still not see all of it. I hope you find something of interest for everyone in your family.

Bangkok Information

Bangkok is by far the largest city in Thailand. Chiang Mai is the second largest city, but is less than a tenth of the size of Thailand's capital and main port. It is the cultural, educational, political and economic center of Thailand, as well as being the only metropolis. Bangkok has grown and expanded to include the area of Thon Buri, which had at one point been the capital of Siam, and the combined area is commonly known as Krungthep Mahanakhon.

Do you know the official name of Bangkok, in the Thai language? It's the longest name in the Guiness Book of World Records. Krungthep Mahanakon Bovorn Rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokpop Noparatratchatathani Burirom Udomratchanivetmahasatan Amornpiman Avatarnsatit Sakkathattiyaavisnukarmprasit.

The english translation would be something like this:
The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn. The most famous one, Wat Phra Gaew is located inside the grounds of the Bangkok Grand Palace. Make sure you visit at least one of the many Bangkok temples during your family vacation in Bangkok.

Bangkok Zoos and Parks

Family vacations can sometimes be filled up with so many activities that make you feel exhausted at the end of each day. Bangkok has several zoos and parks which are a good way to have fun but not wear your family out. The zoos in Thailand allow the visitors to interact with ome of the animals. When our children were younger, they really enjoyed it when we went to the Dusit zoo for a half day. Teenagers may not be as fascinated as your younger kids, but a Bangkok zoo or park can be fun for the entire family.

Bangkok Historical Sites

If you have interest in history in Thailand, there are many Bangkok attractions to visit where you can learn more about it. Bangkok was established in the late 18th century by the King Rama I, the first king in the current dynasty in Thailand. After you see the Bangkok Grand Palace, stop by Vimanmek Mansion and check out this beautiful teak mansion. Even if history is of little interest to your family, consider a visit to one of the Bangkok attractions which represent history in Thailand.
