The old part of the city was built on an island. If you have good walking shoes, you can explore large areas of the island in a few hours. However, to see it all in one day, you should hire a tuk tuk or truck taxi to transport your family around to the various temple ruins and historic sites.
Located just over 50 miles from Bangkok, many people choose to see Ayuthaya on a day trip from the present capital. Ayuthaya is located at a major railway junction, so trains from and to Bangkok are quite frequent. The trip takes about 90 minutes.
If the Thailand train is not your preferred mode of transportation, several buses pass Ayuthaya on their way to Northern Thailand. However, the best way to reach Ayuthaya from Bangkok is by river boat.
