When looking at travel from Bangkok to other parts of Thailand, basically you have three options: Domestic flights, Train travel and Bus travel.Renting a car may be a fourth option, however, make sure you feel comfortable driving in Thailand. Before the turn of the century, most of the domestic flights were handled by Thai Air. Now there are several low budget carriers that provide travel from Bangkok to the provinces.
The rail system in Thailand is fairly extensive. It is operated by the State Railway of Thailand. If you are a first time visitor to Thailand, take the train. It provides a chance to see the Thai countryside. However, if you are in a hurry or on a tight schedule, the train is not the best option. Train travel in Thailand is very slow.
Long distance bus services are a popular way to travel from Bangkok. The fares are cheap and buses will have you at your destination in less time than it takes to go by train. However, I am not a big fan of buses when traveling with my family. The seats are a bit restrictive and it is impractical for your children to move around the bus. Bus travel in Thailand has some advantages and disadvantages.
Driving in Thailand is a bit different than most western countries. But for travel from Bangkok, you may find that renting a car is the most convenient and economical way to transport your family. Unlike the train or bus, when you are the driver of the vehicle or you hire a personal driver, you can decide when and where to stop for breaks.
